HardieBacker cement board is a tile underlayment made for wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms. This cement-based backer board, made of 90% Portland cement and sand, resists damage from moisture and mold and provides excellent tile adhesion. Its formulation and structure results in the ideal combination of strength, uniform composition and performance that no other backer board can provide. HardieBacker cement board was made to be easier to work with so that regardless of how you cut your board, the result is less debris. To make installation simpler, the 1/4 in. x 3 ft. x 5 ft. sheets have James Hardie's exclusive EZ Grid recessed fastener pattern to help with nail and screw placement. HardieBacker cement board's superior strength and durability delivers a solid foundation for tile jobs to help protect your work and reputation. Not sure this recommendation is worth much because I was not using it behind a shower installation, for which I think it is intended. Instead I am using it to put under a fire pit so it doesn't scorch the grass in my yard. I will say that it works fine for that, and it was much easier to work with than regular cement board that I thought I would have to use. This was easy to cut to size (with a utility knife) and lightweight.

I have been a tile contractor since 1993 and have used a lot of hardie backer. I can always tell when a store has had it on hand too long. I just did a 250 sq ft floor job and I purchased 15 sheets from the Santa Rosa, ca store. When I started to cut with my shears and nail it down it cracked, and cut horribly. Shame on home depot for subjecting home owners, who don't know the difference, to dry, un able backerboard because you kept on too long and uncovered it too long. I will be following up on this because it caused a lot of lost time and made my job more difficult than it should have been.

does the job, easy installation
This stuff is great. Being 1/4inch thick, you have to be careful when screwing to the surface. If the torque on your drill is set to high the pressure will result in the board cracking. (However, its not easy. You would need to be rather careless for this to happen). The grid groved into the board is extremely helpful when laying out and measuring your tile design. I would recommend this product anywhere that a 3/4 inch backer is not required.

We used the Hardie Backer board to create a firm, level, and durable surface to apply our marble tile back splash. The Backer Board is not overwhelmingly heavy, it is easy to cut and handle. I really love that it has the...what I would call embossed square grid to help guide and or measure. The Hardie Backer board really made the surface look neat and clean all we have to do now is cover the nail heads with joint compound and install the tiles.

Easy to install over old subfloor!
I needed to do a 425 square foot tiling job. The subfloor was 2 layers of 3/4" plywood (for a total of 1-1/2" thickness), which was nailed/screwed to floor joists. This subfloor was still strong, but it was old, dirty, wavy, and a bit rotten at the surface. I replaced the most rotten sections of subfloor to be safe, but could not afford to replace the whole subfloor. I also could not afford to clean the subfloor via sanding. So, these HardieBacker boards saved the day! These boards are secured to the subfloor with both thin-set AND corrosion resistant screws. The thin-set helped to level the wavy areas, and the screws ensured a secure attachment to the subfloor in the dirty locations. Here are the exact materials I used: 1) This hardiebacker board Model # 220022. 2) Thin-set mortar Model # CBTSG50 (to bond the hardiebacker board to the subfloor). 3) Corrosion resistant cement board screws Model # 23410. 4) Thin-set mortar Model # MTSG50 (to fill the gaps between the hardiebacker board and to bond the tiles to the hardiebacker board). 5) 2" cement board tape Model # FDW8246-U (this tape is pressed into the wet thin-set mortar when filling the gaps between the hardiebacker board). IMPORTANT NOTES: 1 bag of thin-set mortar provides JUST enough material to lay 4 hardiebacker panels. 150 screws are JUST enough to secure 3 hardiebacker panels. The official HardieBacker website has awesome videos to guide your installation. Good luck!

Absolutely garbage
I bought the Hardie backer board thinking it was good stuff considering it's more money. I was dead wrong. Its absolutely garbage, I ended up ripping it off my floor, went to menards, home depot is close to my work but not my home, and bought Durock. This stuff is the Buffalo Board of cement backer.

great product although, I was not satisfied with the 'new' star-tipped hardware for fastening. I had a container of 'old' hardware from a previous installation which had a square bit which were much easier to screw down than the new ones which required a star tipped bit

Every single board was a different dimension or completely out of square. With 50+ sheets to install, it turned a couple hr project into an all day affair with a ton of cuts and still needed additional work to fill joints.....Not impressed
