I purchased three of these to fill in a 5 1/2" strip of flooring that ran perpendicular to the orientation of the hardwood floor in a bedroom. This strip, made of pieces of MDF, had been installed as a base for a wall that had been erected to divide the room. We removed the wall and instead of replacing the hardwood on either side of the strip (which ran nearly 11 feet across the room), we opted to install this inlay border. The border is 6" wide, meaning we needed to enlarge the "trough" slightly; this was done with a mini circular saw. It was tricky getting a perfectly straight edge, but we did. Some wood filler was needed on the side opposite the cut, where a few boards did not align with each other. We then used Bostick glue to adhere the inlay to the subfloor (after the rest of the floor had been sanded and stained), and finished it along with the rest of the room. The only negative thing about this inlay is that, of the three pieces we purchased, one had delaminated a little at one end. We solved this by squishing some Bostick glue into that edge before adhering. Be sure to examine the edges before beginning your project!
