If you bake bread or pizza this is a great alternative to a pizza stone. You want to use UNGLAZED quarry tiles like these. The smaller size allows a more custom fit to cover a greater portion of the rack. I use them on the top rack as well to reflect more heat on the pizza cooking on the rack below (or to cook two pizzas at the same time). They are sold by the case so there's plenty to split a case with friends or to add a few to your grill kit.

Tiles worked well and were a consistent color. I would have given 5 stars but quite a few tiles came through chipped or cracked. I had the tile shipped to the store. Next time I will open and inspect at the store.

Great pizza stones
Build a wood-fired pizza oven for thousands of dollars or buy a case of quarry tiles for $30? The tiles work really well for making home-made, great tasting pizza in my conventional oven. I've even given tiles to friends for baking at their homes.

Great for cooking pizzas.
I know it's not the intended use for these, but it is the reason I bought them. After watching a pizza video, I learned that using quarry tiles was a way to get a pizza stone without spending a lot of money. Just line up 9 stones (3x3) into your oven and you have an 18x18" surface which is perfect for cooking large, 16" pizzas.
I took one star off quality because they can crack. I have had one crack while in the oven and another as I was cleaning it. I was looking for a 3/4" thickness but Home Depot does not carry them in this thickness. Those are less likely to crack.

Pizza stone
Like the previous reviewer, I was searching for something to use as a pizza stone in my oven. My last pizza stone broke and cost a lot more than 9 of these tiles. So far, no breakages, but as I can replace tiles individually, that is of no great concern.

NICE TILES FOR INTENDED USE; NOT GOOD FOR BAKING
These are flooring tiles and I would say that they look good for their intended use. However, I purchased them for use as a pizza and bread baking surface in my oven, and do not recommend them for that use. With a conventional round pizza stone I can only bake 1 pizza at a time. These tiles if they worked correctly allow me to cover 2 oven shelves and bake either 2 pizzas, or numerous bread loaves simultaneously. The problem is that they break rather easily. Pizza is generally not a problem unless the cheese runs over onto the tile. They cannot take any thermal shock. If you spray breads with water for example, they will likely crack immediately. So far, I have broken about 10 tiles. With 44 tiles in a box they will last a while, but a larger baking stone made for specifically for baking would have been a better investment. I have been using the same round stone for years without any cracking, so I have experience with this. Fortunately this was not a big investment, so it's not a big deal, but I won't be buying another box after this one is done.
