I expect variation no greater than 1/64th inch. This created all kinds of cumulative error as I advanced across the floor, resulted in a need for a lot of jacking and left visible gaps between boards where it should have been tight.
I had previously laid a floor using Armstrong wood and this was only a random and occasional problem. Armstrong owns Bruce and the difference in quality was surprising. With modern production equipment this should never happen. You never see plank width variation like that with laminate flooring. Why would solid hardwood be any different?
I wound up filling the cracks with 3M DP-270 epoxy potting compound to close the voids and block dirt from accumulating in the unsightly gaps and to block the ability to look down the crack to the unfinished tongue of the adjoining board.

The web pictures of the product suggested that the flooring...The web pictures of the product suggested that the flooring would be consistently colored. At least 50% of the product had dark swirls.

This product has many more dark pieces and knots than...This product has many more dark pieces and knots than pictured. The premium price vs. the cheaper version is that each box contains some pieces as long as 3 feet, while the cheaper Bruce offering is almost all pieces 1 to 2 feet long. There was also about 10% defective pieces.
