Exceeded my Expections!
Whoever invented the click lock system is a genius! I was astounded at how easily and quickly the flooring went down. Especially since this was the least expensive black bamboo I could find (I did shell out for better underlayment though). Out of seven boxes, I only received one flawed board and I was still able to use most of it for a cut piece. The lengths were very uniform; I only had two that were noticeably shorter. As I was going for a modern look, I used a brick layout so my butt ends all had to line up (and they did with no remedial cutting by me for the full lengths).
I really only had two complaints:
1. “Black” is not a true black, it is a mahogany with black over it.
2. There were lots of little drops of pitch (the lower layers are pine and the boards were not boxed face to face) that had to be cleaned off. I probably spent an hour carefully cleaning off pitch and I still keep finding more. This may, in part, be due to the fact that the flooring from California to Colorado in freezing temps.
Here is what I learned, it may or may not be helpful to you:
1. Print out the instructions from the HomeLegends web site, much better than what comes in the box.
2. Buy a pull bar! A thin hand towel or dish towel is a must to put down under the pull bar. I used a regular hammer with it most of the time, but if I need less force I used a rubber mallet.
3. Buy a Sharpie that matches the finish (this likely a bigger deal with dark colors). There were a few little places along the long edges that needed a touch up before being installed. Also, even with a sharp blade in the miter saw I would get a little splintering when I cut (I think this a bamboo strand issue). I just touched it up with the pen and it was unnoticeable.
4. Keep going back and checking your wall gap. The room I did wasn’t very large (165 sf, I didn’t do in the closets) and there was a lot of drift as I worked. This is key so you don’t cut your last course the wrong width.
5. Also, lots of the butt ends would start to gap several rows back as I worked. An entire row will slide in the channels so you can easily go back and tighten / adjust. They also kept shifting after I was done with all of the flooring. I think this was settling (I had let them acclimatize for two weeks before installing so I don’t think that was a factor). I waited a week to put down baseboard. I checked the floor every night and had fewer spots to tighten each night.
